Mobile devices—such as smartphones and XR headsets—are typically managed by companies using Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems. These systems handle essential configurations, like automatically connecting to corporate Wi-Fi without entering passwords, and managing app installation and updates.
Because of this, it’s important to decide how your devices will be managed before purchasing hardware. While we support Meta Horizon Managed Services, ArborXR, and Intune, not all MDMs are compatible with every headset.
Below is an overview of the available MDM options and which hardware they support.
| MDM | Supported Hardware | Pros | Cons |
| Meta Horizon Managed Services |
Meta Quest 3 Meta Quest 3S |
🟢 Simple to set up 🟢 Cost-effective |
🔴 Only supports Meta devices which are banned in China |
| ArborXR |
Meta Quest 3 Meta Quest 3S Pico 4 Ultra Enterprise |
🟢 Centralized management for Pico and Meta 🟢 More customization than Meta Horizon Managed Services |
🔴 Requires Meta Horizon Managed Services and therefore additional monthly cost for Meta devices 🔴 Slightly more complex to set up |
| Intune |
Meta Quest 3 Meta Quest 3S |
🟢 Central management of XR devices in the same tool as other mobile devices 🟢 Cost-effective |
🔴 Only supports Meta (for now) 🔴 Requires Meta Horizon Managed Services 🔴 May requrie manual app upload or implementing an app update mechanism (e.g., if no integration like Incapptic Connect is set up) 🔴 Least customization options |
For most cases:
Start with Meta Horizon Managed Services. From here, you can:
- Set up ArborXR to additionally manage Pico headsets
- Add ArborXR as a third-party MDM to Meta Horizon Managed Services to centrally manage Pico and Meta
- Add Intune as a third-party MDM to manage Meta devices alongside other mobile devices
Where to Buy:
Once you’ve chosen the right hardware and MDM system, you can begin setting up and managing your devices in the next step: Set up and manage your hardware (MDM)
